| Planned Maintenance |
August 10, 2009 |
|
Our server hosting facility is planning a series of Preventative Maintenance windows that will take us through a systematic Audit, Testing and Repair program. We will predominantly be focusing effort on the Primary Distribution Gear working on one Uninterruptible Power Supply cluster (UPS).
The following work was carried out on the X-Bus from July 8th to July 24th:
a. Completed the installation of additional support hangers on the X-Bus path. This will prevent any sagging that might occur over time and gives the overall Bus Duct better support.
b. Completed a full torque inspection of all the bolts on the X-Bus path confirming that they are within specification. This will ensure the Bus Duct connections are secure.
c. Completed a full audit and repair on all Circuit Breakers and Switchboard gear that interacts with the X-Bus. The tests included a full Bank test that records settings on breakers to ensure they are within standard specification.
There is a high degree of confidence that these maintenance windows will not impact BidNip. The maintenance window schedule is 11 August 2009 starting at 00:05 to 06:05 CDT; 12 August 2009 starting at 00:05 to 06:05 CDT. This type of maintenance is not something we perform on a regular basis but is necessary to ensure the integrity of all electrical systems. During the entire process our hosting provider will be following IEEE standards.

The BidNip server move went without incident - ENJOY!

|
| Site Move/DNS Updates - Scheduled Unavailability |
October 15, 2008 09:32:00 |
|
Great News! We're getting faster servers! That's great news for you - although you shouldn't have seen a slow-down anyway.
We can now handle our near explosive growth for years to come!
The bad news is that we are also moving our database servers and updating our DNS. What that means for you is that we'll have
a short period of "unavailabilty". Our webserver might not be available for a short time during the move.
The move is scheduled for October 28th, 2008, from 10am-11am PDT. During this time we expect that most snipes
will go through, but the website may not be available for updating your existing snipes or adding new snipes.
We're very sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you, BidNip Support.
|
|
| Network Issues |
August 9, 2008 05:32:00 |
|
For a couple hours this morning, BidNip experienced a networking issue with one of its primary connections, affecting routing on all three networks. This caused many bids to be missed or late. Our hosting facility has resolved the issue and bids are now processing normally.
We're very sorry for the inconvenience. If you missed a snipe during this time, please contact us for credits to your account. Again, we're very sorry for any missed bids. Thank you, BidNip Support.

|
| DNS Issues at DNS Provider |
July 22, 2008 14:10:00 |
|
Our primary DNS provider had a major issue this afternoon for a couple hours. Unfortunately, this made the site unreachable for some users during those 2.5 hours. Luckily, this only affected incoming web vists and did not affect snipe placement. Instead of waiting for them to make their updates, we decided to move our DNS to another service for the time being - we don't expect any further issues.
|
|
| Minor eBay Changes |
March 31, 2008 16:00:00 |
|
eBay made a few minor changes to the item and bid pages this afternoon that caused possible issues when scheduling a new snipe for some items. After about 15 minutes the issue was resolved. It did not affect snipe placement and no snipes were missed. We're very sorry for the inconvenience.
|
|
| eBay Maintenance Window |
March 14, 2008 01:00:00 |
|
From 23:10 PDT to 23:57 PDT we saw several missed snipes. During eBay's normal maintenance window (announced here) we saw several No Bid Placed results. Upon viewing the logs for the snipes we found that eBay's sign-in and bidding processes were not
responding to many requests. Unfortunately this is possible during their maintenance window, although it is extremely rare.
This is the first time in several years we've seen an impact this large during their maintenance window. We're very sorry for any missed bids during this short time window.

| DDOS Attack Resolved |
August 3, 2007 10:00:00 |
This morning at approximately 5:47am PDT, our hosting facility experienced a massive DDOS (distributed denial of service)
attack at their main facility (where some of our servers are located). Their status report is available here:
http://www.forest.net/support/. Although we have three seperate network connections, when the first one was brought down by the attack, the attack switched over to the other connections, causing network connectivity to be greatly restricted.
This attack did not breach any of our secure servers. We are working closely with our network provider to eliminate the possibilities of a reoccurance.
The DDOS attack made connections to and from out site difficult for many users, and made a number snipe attempts
late or unsuccessful. However, our servers were not directly targetted, and no user information was compromised.
If you missed a snipe during this time, please contact us for free snipes.
|
|
| Infrequent "Cookie" Issue |
August 2, 2007 20:30:00 |
|
Starting about 2 hours ago, we're seeing about 2-4% of eBay sign in attempts being rejected by the server for incorrect cookie information. This isn't affecting any specific accounts, and seems to be random. It may be related to their scheduled maintenance, but eBay doesn't list any issues on their announcements page. We'll continue to monitor the situation and post updates here. Update (22:20): There was a short break without issues, and now we saw a couple more. We'll continue to monitor.

| New Servers Online! |
June 10, 2007 06:15:00 |
We had hoped to make it a bigger announcement, but while we had the (unrelated) DNS issue, we thought it would be a good
time to do the transfer to the new servers! The new site should be even more reliable!
You may notice the new look, as well as the more secure interface (https://secure.bidnip.com/). While the site was
under beta testing for several weeks, if you see any issues, please contact us and let us know.
|
|
| Internal DNS Issue |
June 10, 2007 06:00:00 |
|
For about 2 hours this morning (from about 3:45am to 6:05am) we experienced a DNS issue that caused many bids to be missed. We have resolved the issue and bids are now processing normally. If you missed a bid during this window, please contact us for free snipes.
We're extremely sorry for the issue and will continue to work at making BidNip the most reliable eBay sniper.
|
|
| Bid Too Low Results |
June 7, 2007 01:00:00 |
|
For several short periods this morning the results for "Bid Too Low" were being mis-labeled as 'No Bid Placed' or 'Unknown'. This only affected bids that were actually too low and only affected our results reporting. No bids were missed due to this issue. We're sorry for any confusion this caused. Remember to always check eBay for official results.
|
|
| Connection Delays |
April 15, 2007 04:00:00 |
|
From approximately 1:54am PDT to 3:39am PDT we experienced sporadic delays in network traffic while connecting to eBay. Some bids during this time did not make it through in time during this period. We're very sorry for any missed snipes. If you had a bid during this time that did not make it through, please contact us for free snipes.
|
|
| Database Cleanup |
April 8, 2007 01:00:00 |
|
We have done our quarterly clean-up of old snipes. Any completed snipes more than about 5 months old have been removed from the active
database and moved to archival storage. If you had a lot of old snipes in your Completed Snipes list, you may notice it's now a smaller
list. Don't worry - we're working on providing you access to all of your old snipes - stay tuned for more details!
|
|
| Network Delays |
Feb. 26, 2007 08:00:00 |
|
Yesterday, the servers saw several short periods of random and sporadic delays when getting responses from the eBay servers (during login and final bid placement steps). Unfortunately this affected some snipes. Everything appears back to normal. We're sorry for any missed bids that occured during these delays yesterday.
|
|
| eBay Site Response Time |
Feb. 11, 2007 18:00:00 |
|
Throughout today we've seen several windows of slow response times from eBay. We're working on adjusting bid times to limit
any missed bids due to these delays. Earlier today eBay experienced an issue with some items in some categories, but it appears
to be resolved at this point. We will continue to monitor the situtation.
|
|
| Database Cleanup |
December 14, 2006 9:00:00 |
|
We have done our quarterly clean-up of old snipes. Any completed snipes more than about 6 months old has been removed from the active
database, and moved to archival storage. If you had a lot of old snipes in your Completed Snipes list, you may notice it's now a smaller
list.
|
|
| Network Interruption |
December 3, 2006 19:01:00 |
|
For about 6 minutes this evening from 19:01:00 PST to 19:07:00, we experienced a temporary increase in network delays. Several bids during this time were mistakenly reported as "Bid Too Low". If you missed an auction during this time, please contact us for credits. We're sorry for the missed snipes. We'll continue to develop our systems to predict and eliminate any delays.

| Daylight Saving Change |
October 29th, 2006 6:00:00am |
|
Although most daylight savings change-overs go well, this one wasn't perfect. Our servers switched times without an issue, but it appears
that there were a few eBay servers that didn't switch over as cleanly as possible. They would respond with "Auction Ended", even though it
was still going on. Our multiple attempts caught many, but a few weren't. eBay is normally very quick to resolve these issues and
expect the problem fixed shortly. We're very sorry for any missed bids.
|
|
| Ebay Response Issues |
September 6th, 2006 9:00:00am |
|
Earlier today we started seeing sporadic "Page Not Responding" problems from eBay, similar to what we saw for a couple days
a few weeks ago. It's about 1 in 1000 that result in "Unknown" results - No bid placed, and it seems to focus around some
specific item categories (some clothing and coin categories). We are increasing the re-try attempts and
are working on additional work-arounds and hope to have them tested and installed as soon as possible.
|
|
| Rare Misses |
August 17th, 2006 5:00:00pm |
|
Starting a few days ago, we started seeing rare (less than 1 in 1000) misses that result in "Unknown" results - No bid placed.
The logs show that eBay responded with "Page Not Responding". Although second attempts are usually successful, some get the
same results. We are working on additional work-arounds and hope to have them tested and installed in the next few days.
|
|
| BidNip Database Cleanup |
August 6th, 2006 5:30:00pm |
|
Over the next few days, BidNip will be performing some database clean-up and trimming. This will include removing
several million bid results prior to January 15, 2006 from the "live" database. This is ONLY for results, and will not affect bids scheduled
after January 15th, 2006.
Thank you - BidNip Support.

|
| eBay Server Timing Issue |
April 16th, 2006 10:30:00am |
|
On a very small number of auctions, we're seeing the wrong closing time on eBay's site.
This is very similar to what happened two weeks ago during the daylight savings transition.
The auctions are still open, yet they respond with "Auction Ended". Our previous work-around is not by-passing the issue.
It is currently very sporadic, and affecting only a very small number of bids.
We'll update here as soon as we know more. Thank you - BidNip Support.
Update: April 17th, 6:00am: eBay appears to have resolved their issue.
|
|
| eBay Daylight Savings Switchover Issue |
April 2nd, 2006 6:00:00am |
|
On a very small number of auctions, we're seeing the wrong closing time on eBay's site (they're an hour off). It appears that a few
of eBay's servers didn't handle the Daylight Savings Switchover (PST/PDT) correctly, and are closing auctions early. Fortunately,
it's an extremely small number of occurances that we see this issue - less than one in 600 - but so far, it hasn't been predictable
enough for us to counteract the error. We'll update here as soon as we know more. Thank you - BidNip Support.
Update: April 3rd, 8:00pm: eBay appears to have resolved their issue. All bids are now being placed on time.
|
|
| New eBay Item Format! |
March 6th, 2006 12:40:00pm |
|
eBay has started installing its
new Item Page Format on some auctions.
It's got excellent new design features to help you quickly review item information.
The changes caused a minor glitch in our snipe scheduling software (not bid placing, only scheduling),
that should be mostly resolved now.
|
|
| eBay Sign In Issues |
Dec 19th, 2005 6:00:00am |
|
Starting at abou 5:00am, eBay is having technical difficulties with thier sign in page. Due to their
difficulties, sign ins are failing or taking over 30 seconds. Unfortunately, this is causing many bids
to be missed. eBay posted information at
http://www2.ebay.com/aw/core/200512190625281.html.
We will continue to monitor the situation.
Update: 7:30am: eBay appears to have resolved their issue. Bids are now being placed on time.

| Short eBay Outage |
Nov 2nd, 2005 6:00:00 |
|
For about 20 minutes this evening, between 5:10 and 5:30pm, eBay was having technical difficulties. Due to their
difficulties, they were not accepting bids or processing most page requests. Unfortunately, this cased many bids
during this time to be missed. eBay posted information at
http://www2.ebay.com/aw/core/200511021744041.html.

|
| Daylight Savings Hiccup |
Oct 30th, 2005 6:00:00 |
|
During the daylight savings changeover early this morning, one of the servers did not update correctly, causing about
a dozen missed bids. All other servers updated correctly, and most bids were placed correctly. If your bid was missed,
please contact us.

|
| Severe eBay Outage |
May 9th, 2005 19:45:00 |
|
eBay is currently experiencing a major server outage. This causing most pages to not load or take over a minute to load. They
have announced the problem on their help site at:
http://www2.ebay.com:80/aw/announce.shtml#2005-05-09215408.
Unfortunately, this is causing nearly all bids to be missed, and we are currently recommending bids be placed by hand.
Thank you, BidNip Support.
Update 21:45:00: eBay is still having issues. We'll update here as soon as we know more.
Update 21:55:00: Latest from eBay here. Appears they had a major power outage at a server facility. They are partially back up at this point.
Update 02:10:00: eBay is finally back to 100%. All bids are going through normally. We're very sorry for any missed bids.
|
|
| eBay Response Issue |
April 4th, 2005 19:35:00 |
|
For about five minutes (between 19:28 and 19:32 PST) one or more of the eBay servers was not responding correctly. They resolved
the issue as soon as we started investigating. Most snipes made it through during this period, but a few did not get responses
from eBay during bidding, and may be marked "No Bid Placed". We're sorry for any missed bids, and we'll continue to watch for any
other issues. Thank you, BidNip Support.

|
| Another Successful Time Change |
April 3rd, 2005 10:30:00 |

We went through another daylight savings time change without any problems or issues. Happy Sniping! Thank you, BidNip Support.
|
|
| EBay Issues Tonight |
March 22nd, 2005 16:20:00 |
|
It appears eBay is having problems with their site. We are seeing some missed bids due to changes and page delivery delays (Some are reported as "Bid Too Low" or "No Bid Placed". We are working on the problem and advise you to manually place your bids at this time. We're very sorry for any missed bids. Thank you - BidNip Support.
UPDATE 17:20 PST: It may not be changes. They are acknowledging some issues on their site, and more bids are now going through. We will continue to monitor the issue closely. It currently appears to be an eBay issue.
UPDATE Mar. 22 17:45 PST: EBay appears to have the problem resolved, and say so here. Snipes are now being placed without a problem. We'll continue to monitor and update you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience. Again, we are very sorry for any missed bids.
|
|
| Member Home Page Update |
March 21st, 2005 19:00:00 |
|
We've completed two small updates to the member home page. Fisrt, we added an additional link to the account page, making it easier to update your account information. Second, we added a limit to the number of completed snipes displayed on the member home page. Now, instead of having all of your old snipes displayed, we only show the fifty most recent. We also added a link to show all of your completed snipes if you have more than fifty. (Note: if you have less than 50, you won't notice any changes.)
|
|
| Extended Moving Update |
March 10th, 2005 19:30:00 |
|
As many of you may have noticed, our "brief" outage turned into a "not-quite-so-brief" outage as one of our main database servers did not come back online as expected.
Our engineers worked quickly to restore the database (backed up just before we started the move) onto a new server, and we're now back to 100%. We're very sorry for any missed bids.
Thank you,
Stephen Cook, BidNip CEO

|
| Hosting Upgrade! Scheduled Downtime on March 10th |
March 1st, 2005 14:00:00 |
|
We're growing so much, we need more rack space! We're moving our entire setup to a new facility with even better power and network connections. Unfortunately, to do so, our systems may be unavailable during the transfer. The good news is that we will be adding more servers to make BidNip even more reliable and easier to access!
We will have scheduled intermittent down time between 2pm and 4pm PST on Thursday, March 10th
We will try to limit the downtime, but unforutnatley some downtime is unavoidable. The likelyhood of some bids being missed during this time is great. The website may also be unavailable during this time.
We are recommending that our members not schedule bids during that time. We will also include a warning on the snipe scheduling page in case there are attempts to schedule bids during that time.
Thank you for your patience!
BidNip Support

|
| Database Cleanup |
March 1st, 2005 11:00:00 |
|
We're going to clean out our database of old snipes! Any snipes that you have that are over 6 months old will be moved to an "offline" database. This is for SNIPES OLDER THAN 6 MONTHS ONLY! Snipes before Sept. 1st, 2004 will be removed from the main database. Snipes after that date will remain in the database until the next clean-up. The older snipes will be removed over the next few days.

|
| Feb. 23rd - Backup Network Engaged |
February 23rd, 2005 21:00:00 |
|
Earlier this evening our primary Internet connection was experiencing technical issues. Our secondary (first back-up) network was engaged automatically within a few seconds. Down-time was only a few seconds during the switch-over, and very few snipes were missed.
The problem was resolved and the return to the primary network did not cause any missed bids.
|
|
| Feb. 9th - eBay Issues |
February 9, 2005 18:45:00 |
|
For about 15 minutes this evening, eBay experienced intermittent problems. The issues ranged from some servers
not responding to some servers with incorrect times (auctions remaining online longer than scheduled and bids
with incorrect times recorded). It appears the issue is resolved, but we will continue to monitor for any changes.

| Dutch Auction Issues |
October 30 2004 06:00:00 |
|
Ebay's recent changes to the Dutch Auction process has caused some mislabeled snipes and lower quantities. We are currently working on the situation and apologize for any missed quantities or mislabeled results.
This does NOT affect regular eBay auctions and sniping at BidNip.
Thank you, BidNip Support

|
| PayPal.com Payment Issues |
October 12 2004 08:00:00 |
|
UPDATE Oct. 14, 2004: PayPal appears to be working currectly now.
PayPal is currently experiencing technical difficulties.
PayPal's current issues have caused many payments to not complete, which means that some accounts aren't updated with snipes right away. If you purchased snipes using a credit card or cash transfer, and your account did not update right away, please let us know, and we'll make sure your account is credited right away. For e-checks however, the 5 day "clearance" wait is still in effect.

Earlier today we expereienced site unavailability to some users - this was caused by a DNS update issue and has been resolved as of approximate 2am. Unfortunately, because DNS information can take as long as 12-24 hours, some users had trouble reaching the site. We're sincerely apologize for the issue.
No bids were missed because of this issue. Because the issue was related to connectiong into the servers, and not outbound traffic (snipes), there was no issue with placing scheduled bids. Thank you, and Happy Sniping!

| eBay Changes and Missed Snipes |
Jul. 1st 2004 06:00:00 |
|
It appears that eBay is currently updating its bidding proces and pages. Because they are testing the new system, we are sometimes receiving different bidding pages. This is confusing our bid server because the pages and forms are slightly different.
We are developing a work-around until eBay makes the changes on 100% of their servers. Because it is unpredictable and rare when the new pages appear, this may take up to 2 days to comlpete.
eBay has scheduled downtime this evening, which may include a complete switch over to the new pages. If this is the case, we should be back to 100% within 24 hours. Check here for the latest updates.

| eBay Outage |
Mar. 24th 2004 12:00:00 |

From 10:42am PST to 11:40am PST, eBay experienced technical difficulties and some bids were missed. They have resolved the issue. We're sorry for any missed bids.

| eBay Plans Item Page and Process Updates |
Feb. 24rd 2004 22:00:00 |
According to eBay's Community Announcement Page, they plan on updating both the Item pages and part of the bidding process.
Though they don't get specific on some of the changes, this does mean that a possible short outage is possible in the coming
days. We are not 100% sure we'll have any issues, but we like to keep our members informed of even a possible service
interruption.
We will do our best to limit the downtime, if there is any. Thank you - BidNip Support and Engineers.

| eBay Server Issues |
Feb. 23rd 2004 14:00:00 |
Starting just before 2pm PST, eBay was experiencing network issues and was timing out on most connections. The issue was seen from multiple locations throughout the 'net, which localized the issue at eBay (not our multiple connections to the 'net). We will keep you up to date.
Update (14:16:00): It looks like their systems are back online, at least partially.
We apologize for any missed bids.

| eBay Server Issues |
Jan. 6th 2004 15:30:00 |
|
For about a half an hour this afternoon - between 14:51 and 15:20 - eBay servers were offline and not responding to
snipe/bid requests. Unfortunately, there was nothing we could do about it from this side (all our networks remained
completely operational - we checked and re-checked). eBay has posted the information on their
Announcement Board. We apologize for any
missed bids.

| eBay Announces Upgrades Officially |
18Nov 06:00:00 |
|
eBay officially announced today that it is
Upgrading its signin process. Of course, we knew this already, but it does make it seem likely that more changes are coming.
Our current snipe servers now use the http://signin.ebay.com/ URL, so it is also possible, that the changes we've made to BidNip
will work on the new process. We are keeping a close eye on biddings and are ready to make changes as soon as any are needed.
The changes to eBay were made to increase safety and curtail some of the pirate/phoney emails that warn users of "security problems" and ask them to sign in, but link to sites other than eBay. Be careful when signing in to ANY site, and make sure the Address/URL is what you think it should be.

| eBay "Upgrades"... UGH! |
17Nov 19:00:00 |
eBay's changes continue. Nearly half of all snipes are being rejected due to issues with their new bid process. All
engineers are working non-stop to bring BidNip service back up to 100%. Update (21:00:00) We are back up to 100% operational, and have updated all servers with new snipe software.

|
| eBay "Upgrades"... Final Chapter? |
17Nov 16:00:00 |
For the first time in over a year, eBay overhauled its bidding process. Of the several thousand bids scheduled during the change-over, BidNip Snipe Servers missed only a handful of bids (about 25). As of Nov 17th, 4pm PST, we are operating at 100%. We will be monitoring the situation constantly for any issues or problems (or if eBay has any other changes up its sleeves). We are very sorry for any missed bids or incorrect results.
If you missed any bids, please contact us for some additional free snipes.

| eBay "Upgrades... Continued" |
15Nov 06:00:00 |
|
eBay's bid placing system continues to be upgraded. Although our fix is working 99% of the time, there is currently a slight chance of missing auctions due to Login Issues at eBay (our login attempts are returned with an error from eBay). As soon as eBay's new process becomes stable, we'll be back up to 100%. Watch this page for updates.

| eBay "Upgrades" |
12Nov 04:00:00 |
|
We've updated our snipe engines and servers, and are now functioning 100%. In the coming weeks we'll keep an extra watch out for any more changes. We're sure they're coming, and we're doing everything we can to make the impact as minimal as possible.

| eBay "Upgrades" |
11Nov 16:00:00 |
|
WARNING: Earlier today, around 4 PM PST, eBay started having login issues with users. We have seen about 10-15% of snipes
missed due to what eBay returns as "Invalid Logins", when in fact they are valid logins. We are investigating immediately. We apologize for any problems or missed bids this may cause. UPDATE: The snipe engines have been updated with eBay's new bidding process.
